Water Quality Studies

Water Quality SamplingESS has extensive experience in comprehensive water quality investigations, assessments, and management plans. Our water quality studies have included rivers and streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, estuaries, and marine waters. Our services include characterization of flows and discharges and analytical modeling of both simple and complex systems. ESS water quality specialists conduct watershed-scale assessments, field investigations, and modeling to comply with various federal and state water quality protection and regulatory programs. Water Quality Sampling & Monitoring

ESS has designed and implemented hundreds of water quality sampling and monitoring programs. The results have been used to establish baseline conditions, calculate nutrient budgets and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), design stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs), develop watershed management plans, measure success of aquatic restoration, and ensure compliance with permit conditions or regulatory requirements. The primary sampling and monitoring programs have focused on phosphorous and nitrogen, fecal coliform and bacteria, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and temperature as well as metals. DNA ribotyping was also performed on strands of bacteria to identify contaminant sources.

Water Quality Modeling

Water quality models of varying complexity are standard tools for predicting and simulating surface water movement and evaluating potential water quality impairments. ESS has experience using and customizing water quality and watershed models as well as having first hand knowledge in conducting sampling and monitoring to calibrate the results of these models. This experience includes water quality modeling under various watershed build-out scenarios and/or implementation of alternate BMPs. Scientists, engineers, and regulatory specialists evaluate the model results to identify pollutant hot-spots and prioritize locations to implement solutions to reduce pollutant loading. The results are also used to provide short-term and long-term management recommendations that are cost-effective and compliant with regulatory requirements.
