I have been very pleased with each of the projects I have worked on with ESS. From training volunteers in the field to lab work to filing Notices of Intent for lake management projects, all have gone perfectly. The deliverables have always been very thorough, professional, and well-crafted, leaving little room for comment. I look forward to our next project.
Vegetation & Wildlife
ESS has conducted numerous vegetation and wildlife habitat evaluations, natural resource inventories, and invasive species surveys across terrestrial, aquatic, and marine settings. Our staff are experienced in the identification and taxonomy of fauna and flora throughout the northeastern US. Our ecologists, biologists, and scientists with advanced degrees in aquatic ecology, botany, fisheries, ornithology, herpetology, wildlife ecology, zoology, and invertebrate zoology have conducted numerous field investigations, surveys, restoration studies, and taxonomic evaluations.
ESS services for vegetation and wildlife include:
Vegetation Inventories & Management Plans
ESS has provided specialized vegetation inventories and management plans for terrestrial invasive vegetation and nuisance aquatic weeds, as well as threatened and endangered plant species. Site specific field surveys of vegetation requires an understanding of the growing season, flowering period, and habitat requisites of each species targeted by the survey. Our ecologists and environmental scientists have experience in field identification of target species, defining seasonal attributes, and specific habitat requirements that allow us to conduct field surveys in the most cost-effective manner. The data provided in the vegetation inventories and management plans are used to support our clients with environmental impact analysis, compliance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations, Section 7 consultations, and mitigation planning, as appropriate.
Avian & Bat Studies
ESS has been at the forefront of conducting avian and bat surveys, risk assessments, and monitoring for wind energy facilities, both onshore and offshore since 2001. We have conducted over a decade of avian and bat studies in support of offshore wind and successful Section 7 Consultations with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. We have led the way in devising techniques to investigate and monitor potential impacts to birds and bats from wind turbine projects. We developed the first Avian & Bat Monitoring Plan for an offshore wind project approved by the US Fish & Wildlife Services and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
We have conducted extensive avian field surveys (aerial, boat, and land-based), ground truthing of migratory radar studies, and assessments of risk to birds and bats to evaluate potential impacts from both large commercial and community-scale wind projects. Our expertise includes:
