Submarine Cable Systems

Submarine Cable InstallationESS has a substantive, sophisticated understanding of the unique technical issues associated with the planning, permitting, and installation of offshore submarine electric transmission cables. We have established working relationships with national and international submarine cable manufacturers and installers, which allows us to understand their product designs, installation methods and means, and installation technical criteria and limitations.

Comprehensive Submarine Cable Consulting

ESS develops and implements regulatory strategies, develops desktop assessments and routing studies, conducts field surveys, and prepares comprehensive environmental impact documents in support of the development of submarine cable systems in offshore, coastal, and riverine environments. ESS has prepared environmental impact documents and permit applications to satisfy state and federal agencies including the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Corps of Engineers, and US Coast Guard. ESS also provides engineering design for landfall transitions involving jet plow embedment, dredging, and horizontal directional drilling. We have offered consulting to a broad range of clients on submarine cable projects, including independent transmission companies, public utilities, design engineers, installation contractors, and regulatory agencies.

Coastal & Offshore Resource Evaluations

ESS field teams collect and analyze data on sediment characteristics, bathymetry, water quality, benthic fauna, fisheries, and endangered species to support submarine cable system routing, permitting, installation, and operations. ESS capabilities include benthic habitat assessments, Biological Assessments & Section 7 Consultations, Essential Fish Habitat Assessments, contaminated sediment characterization, water quality analysis, and navigation risk assessments. ESS’s full life cycle consulting extends to providing detailed mitigation plans and performing construction inspections and environmental monitoring to ensure compliance with permit conditions.
