Block Island Wind Farm & sea2shore System Receives Environmental-Energy Award

May 11, 2017 – ESS Group, Inc. congratulates the Block Island Wind Farm and sea2shore Transmission System team on being awarded the Ira W. Leighton Jr. Outstanding Environmental-Energy Technology Achievement Award by the Environmental Business Council of New England (EBC). The team, which includes Deepwater Wind and National Grid, will be honored for the successful construction, installation, and commissioning of the first offshore wind facility in the United States at an award ceremony on June 8 in Boston.

ESS provided third-party environmental compliance monitoring during the construction and installation of the 30 MW wind farm and 20-mile submarine cable system. ESS served as a key liaison between the developer and regulators and enabled effective stakeholder communication and collaboration during the construction and installation process.

“It was an honor to witness and help facilitate the development of the first offshore windfarm in the United States,” said ESS Project Manager Stephanie Wilson. “The project is well-deserving of this award. Not only is it a first for the national renewable energy industry, but locally the project provides clean, renewable energy to Block Island and it has diversified Rhode Island and New England’s regional power supply.”

ESS President & CEO Charles Natale added, “This project is a tremendous example of successful collaboration and cooperation between developers, state and federal leadership, construction partners, and local contractors. ESS congratulates Deepwater Wind, National Grid, and the rest of the project team on its EBEE Award, and is proud to have played a part in this milestone moment for the country.”
