epaPublic Comments Period Open for EPA's Draft Environmental Justice Agenda

Through June 15, 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting public comments on the draft Environmental Justice 2020 Action Agenda (EJ 2020) framework, an overall strategy to achieve environmental justice and support efforts in under-represented and economically-disadvantaged communities.

EJ 2020 will support environmental justice through changes in the EPA's programs, policies, and activities, including increased cross-agency cooperation and improved permitting and enforcement.

The main goals of the framework are:

  • Strengthen EPA environmental justice practices to improve overburdened communities
  • Increase impact and collaboration with key players within those communities
  • Demonstrate progress in those communities

stacksU.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Explorer Tool Released

The EPA has released the 20th Annual U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a yearly report analyzing previous greenhouse gas emissions and current emission trends in the country.

As published in the report, the Inventory shows a "two percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions in 2013 from 2012 levels, but a nine percent drop in emissions since 2005." In total, the U.S. emitted the equivalent of 6,673 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2013, with 31 percent coming from power plants, 27 percent coming from the transportation sector, and 21 percent coming from the industry and manufacturing sector.

In addition to the Inventory, the EPA has also unveiled the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Explorer Tool, an interactive guide that allows users to generate custom, segmented emissions data sorted by specific categories like sector, year, and type of greenhouse gas.
