green-infrastructureStormwater and Green Infrastructure Financing

As many studies have proven, stormwater management via green infrastructure can have beneficial results, including reduced runoff, flooding, and pollution. Unfortunately, implementing green infrastructure stormwater projects has traditionally been a challenge due to the difficulties associated with financing these projects. However, a variety of updated business models and funding sources are available to support and finance stormwater management programs or individual projects.

The Water Environment Federation and the U.S. EPA have just released new documents that describe innovative approaches to finance programs and projects to support stormwater controls and green infrastructure. floodExecutive Order Establishes Flood Risk Reduction Standard

An executive order released by the White House on January 30, 2015 creates a new flood risk reduction standard for federally funded projects. The standard provides three planning options when siting, designing, and constructing new projects. When determining the flood elevation and hazard areas, new projects must:

  • Use the "best-available, actionable climate science"
  • Build two feet above the 100-year flood elevation (or three feet above for critical buildings)
  • Build to the 500-year flood elevation
