algaeHandling a Bumper Crop of Water Weeds

In the heat of August, lakes and ponds are challenged by aquatic invasive species. "From mid-August into September, many lakes and ponds are overwhelmed by invasive water plants. These 'weeds' impact recreational use and destroy natural ecosystems," says Certified Lake Manager Carl Nielsen. ESS scientists are hard at work this time of year supporting communities and lake associations by implementing weed management programs.

ESS was recently awarded a contract by the State of Connecticut to provide control services for aquatic invasives and will present on this topic at the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions fall conference in September.
