Hudson Transmission Project Reaches Milestone with Installation of Submarine Transmission Cable System January 4, 2012 – ESS Group, Inc. congratulates Hudson Transmission Partners, LLC on the recent installation of the 4-mile submarine electric transmission cable portion of its Hudson Transmission Project between Edgewater, New Jersey and Piers 92-94 at the Midtown Manhattan waterfront in New York.
When fully constructed, the Hudson Project will provide a 660 MW electric transmission link between New York City and the PJM Interconnection. Overall, the components of the Project will include a new Back-to-Back (BtB) AC-DC-AC Converter Station in Ridgefield, New Jersey; a 230 kV AC underground transmission line interconnection between the new converter station and the PJM Interconnection at the PSE&G Bergen Substation; and a combination of underground cables and the recently installed a 345 kilovolt (kv) submarine cable, which will link the converter station to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) on the New York side at the Con Edison 49th Street Substation. Terry Orr, ESS Project Manager for the Hudson Project, stated, “This installation represents a significant achievement towards bringing additional electrical capacity to Manhattan. ESS is pleased to have played an important role in helping Hudson Transmission Partners reach this milestone.” ESS has been working on the Hudson Transmission Project since 2006 when it was retained by the project developer to characterize existing environmental conditions, prepare routing studies, and identify potential impacts in New York and New Jersey, including the potential effect on water and sediment quality of cable installation in the Lower Hudson River.
Over the past five years, ESS has also led the preparation and monitoring of several regulatory permit applications including an Article VII Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need with the New York Public Service Commission; joint application and review by the New York District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; and applicable state and local permit applications required in New York and New Jersey.
